Yes — the M8 series is fully compatible with IO-Link communication. IO-Link uses a standard 4-pin configuration (power, ground, communication, and optional extra signal). All IO-Link devices require the connector to maintain the signal integrity of the IO-Link communication (typically 230.4 kbps). Reunion's 4-pin shielded M8 connectors are specifically recommended for IO-Link due to:
- EMI shielding — Protects communication from industrial noise.
- Gold-plated contacts — Maintain low contact resistance for reliable data transmission.
- IP67 sealing — Protects against moisture that could create leakage paths affecting signal quality.
To achieve and maintain IP67 sealing, Reunion recommends:
- Mating torque — Hand-tighten the coupling nut until the O-ring contacts the panel surface, then apply additional torque of 0.4-0.6Nm using a torque wrench. Do not exceed 0.8Nm, as over-tightening can damage the O-ring or the connector threads.
- O-ring inspection — The pre-installed O-ring should be inspected at each disconnect. Replace the O-ring if deformation, cracking, or hardening is visible. O-rings are available as service parts from Reunion.
- Cable bend radius — Maintain a minimum bend radius of 5× cable diameter at the connector entry to prevent stress on the cable seal.
- Cleaning — For washdown applications, clean the connector exterior with mild detergent and water. Do not use pressure washers directly on the mating interface.
- Replacement schedule — For demanding applications (daily washdown, chemical exposure), we recommend replacing O-rings annually as part of preventive maintenance. For standard factory-floor environments, O-ring replacement every 2-3 years is typically sufficient.
